WORLD THALASSAEMIA DAY

The Department of Child Health Nursing observed World Thalassaemia Day 2026 on 8th May 2026 in the Sixth Semester classroom with the objective of creating awareness regarding thalassaemia, its prevention, early diagnosis, and the importance of community support for affected individuals and families.The programme was conducted in accordance with the 2026 World Thalassaemia Day theme, emphasizing awareness, prevention, patient support, and collective responsibility toward improving the quality of life of individuals living with thalassaemia.The programme began with a brief introduction about World Thalassemia Day and the significance of educating the public regarding genetic blood disorders. Faculty members explained the causes, symptoms, treatment, preventive measures, and the importance of premarital and antenatal screening for thalassemia prevention.

As part of the awareness programme, a Poster Competition was organized among sixth semester students. The students actively participated and prepared informative and creative posters related to thalassemia awareness, blood donation, genetic counselling, patient care, and prevention strategies. The posters effectively conveyed messages promoting compassion, support, and health education.The posters were evaluated based on relevance to the theme, creativity, presentation, clarity of message, and overall impact. Winners of the competition were appreciated and congratulated for their excellent efforts and innovative ideas.

The programme helped students improve their understanding of thalassemia and encouraged them to actively participate in health awareness activities within the community. The session concluded with a vote of thanks expressing gratitude to the faculty members, organizers, judges, and students for their enthusiastic participation and cooperation in making the programme successful and meaningful.

Programme outcome:

1. Enhanced awareness among nursing students regarding thalassaemia, its causes, prevention, diagnosis, and management.
2. Improved understanding about the importance of genetic counselling, premarital screening, and voluntary blood donation in preventing thalassaemia.
