Industrial Visit to KINFRA Organized by the Department of Community Health Nursing

Introduction

As part of the academic requirements for the subject Community Health Nursing, the final year B.Sc. Nursing students of PKDAS College of Nursing undertook an industrial visit to KINFRA Small Industries Park, Lakkidi. The visit aimed to provide firsthand exposure to industrial working conditions and understand the measures taken to safeguard the health and safety of workers.

Occupational health is a key area of focus in community health, and this visit helped students bridge theoretical learning with practical application. It also highlighted the important role that industrial nurses play in preventing occupational hazards and promoting a safe work environment.

Objectives of the Visit

  1. To identify various occupational hazards in industrial settings.
  2. To understand the roles and responsibilities of an industrial nurse.
  3. To observe safety protocols and preventive measures implemented in industries.
  4. To apply theoretical knowledge of community health nursing in a real-world industrial context.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the visit:

  • Gained practical understanding of different types of occupational hazards such as chemical exposure, physical injuries, and ergonomic risks.
  • Observed the implementation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like gloves, helmets, masks, and hair caps.
  • Understood the proactive role of industrial nurses in health assessment, emergency response, health education, and maintaining a safe workplace.
  • Recognized the importance of regular health check-ups and safety training programs in preventing occupational diseases and injuries.

The nurse who guided them throughout the visit explained various safety practices and took the group on a tour of five different companies within the KINFRA premises:

  1. East Asian Cosmetics (Soap Factory)
  2. Skylark Plastics
  3. Sagar Tank Company
  4. Bottle Manufacturing Company
  5. Sheet Making Company

In each industry, students observed workplace operations and learned about specific health risks and preventive practices relevant to that environment. Proper use of PPE was practiced during the visit to ensure the safety of all visitors.

The tour provided valuable insights into how health and safety are maintained across different manufacturing processes, and how industrial nurses contribute to overall worker well-being.

Report Summary

Each of the five industries presented unique occupational environments, hazards, and protective measures. The visit highlighted:

  • The importance of safety audits and risk assessments.
  • Procedures followed in case of industrial accidents.
  • Health education sessions conducted for workers.
  • Collaborative efforts between management and health professionals to create a safe work environment.

The industrial nurse played a key role not only in handling emergencies but also in conducting preventive health screenings, monitoring work conditions, and training workers.

Conclusion

The industrial visit to KINFRA Lakkidi was an enriching and educational experience for the 4th-year B.Sc. Nursing students. It provided valuable exposure to real-world occupational health practices and reinforced the critical role of nursing in industrial health care.

The insights gained during the visit will greatly enhance our understanding of community health nursing, particularly in occupational settings. This practical experience will serve as a strong foundation for our future roles as professional nurses committed to promoting health and safety in all environments.
