World Disability Day

In observance of World Disability Day (03/12/2025), the Department of Mental Health Nursing at PKDCN organized an Awareness and Recreational Programme in association with Polygarden, Lakkidi, Ottapalam. The event was centred around the theme of "Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress". The primary objective was to promote understanding, dignity, rights, and well-being for over a billion people with disabilities worldwide. It aimed to advocate for inclusive policies and actions across various sectors such as urban planning, education, and healthcare, emphasizing the importance of societal inclusion and empowerment.

The program commenced with a welcome speech delivered by Mr. Sumesh William, a Special Educator at Polygarden. This was followed by the inaugural address from Mrs. Sindhu Ganeshan, a Student Counsellor at the Nehru Group of Institutions, Kerala. The presidential address was given by Mr. Tony V. R, a Counsellor and Special Educator, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and inclusive practices. Additionally, felicitation was extended by Mr. Jojy Abraham, a Special Educator at Polygarden.

To promote holistic well-being, a yoga session was conducted by Mrs. Sujisha from Polygarden. The event also featured a motivational speech by Mr. Annu Darshab, Chairman of Bodha School, focusing on resilience and mental health. Mrs. Shincy K, an Assistant Professor at PK Das College of Nursing, provided insights into maintaining good health and the significance of mental health care

The program witnessed active participation from approximately 90 students from 5th Semester,PKDCN, and 15 faculty members, alongside 136 inmates of Polygarden. This diverse attendance reflected a strong interest in mental health issues among the academic community and the broader society. The event facilitated meaningful interactions, fostering awareness and understanding of mental health challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and inmates. Various recreative activities by 5th semester students, P K Das College of Nursing were conducted during Programmes

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Joseph Philip, staff member at Polygarden. The event wrapped up with light refreshments, including tea and snacks, which provided an informal setting for discussions and networking among attendees. This environment encouraged the exchange of ideas and reinforced the importance of community support in mental health initiatives.
